Around the World On a Bicycle
Steve Long, Anchorman at KMEG/KPTH on Saturday, June 12th, 2010
These days we don't hear much about adventurers, but now and then, they're still around.
One man is doing something many of us may dream about, but most never do. And not even he knows his final destination.
" My name is Ari Gold, that's Ari, last name Gold like a ring, put an m in front of it I'm a flower," Ari Gold says.
49 year old Ari Gold has two wheels and one goal.
"I'm riding my bicycle around the world with next to nothing in terms of finances and bunch of ingenuity to make up for it," he says.
His ride began he says, in September of 2009
"I have a sleeping bag, a tent, a tarp," Gold says.
Divorced, with no children, no home, and no job, he also had no attachments and the wheels started turning.
"Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? You can do it. I want to see the world. You know I had to ask myself and the answer is I want to see the world," he says.
He says his bike has already carried him to New Mexico, Texas, Missouri and more.
"I'm doing what I want to do, what I really want to do, I'm going to see the world just like some little kid in some little book that's going off on an adventure," Gold says.
Once he rolls out of Sioux city he plans to head north and cut across Canada to the coast.
"I'll find work to get across on a ship ocean going vessel of some kind," he says.
Two feet, two pedals, and a vision.
"The castles, the museums," he says.
No fancy wheels.
"In the orient those pictures are they real can land just sort of drip out of the sky like that?" he says.
No fancy meals.
"I've got peanut butter, olive oil, dried minced garlic, curry, salt tortillas, you can't crush tortilla's they're already flat," he says.
So how will he know when his trip is over?
"Same way you find out when you're full. When do you stop eating? when you're full."
And For now, he's not full, in fact, he's not even close.
